Where are floodplain meadows?

The national distribution of lowland marsh marigold - crested dogstail (MG8) and other species-rich communities is not well known. However, it is considered that there is only a small amount of the lowland MG8 community remaining in England.

The Meadow Map

The Floodplain Meadows Partnership have compiled a list of all known floodplain meadow sites, including all known areas of great burnet-meadow foxtail (MG4) grassland. This list also contains some marsh marigold-crested dog’s tail (MG8) sites, some restoration sites and some other sites that the Partnership have collected information from. It is not comprehensive, nor specific to one grassland type. Please remember that many of the sites listed on the map are in private ownership and do not have public access. You are welcome to visit those that are open to the public however. Click on the map and follow the links to find out where your nearest accessible meadow is and to update information for an existing site, click on the site name on the above map. You can add a new floodplain site using the link below.

Meadow Watch

We would really like to hear your observations on your local meadow, whether you own it, are responsible for its management, walk through it or can remember something about it from the past. We are particularly interested in current management information, for example when the hay was cut, when the site was grazed, whether it floods and if so, dates. We are also interested in your memories of a particular meadow and whether you have noticed any changes. All this information helps us to interpret data that we are collecting on some sites and gives us a better understanding of how meadows might be changing over time on meadows throughout the UK.
